Lone Drake Waterfowl Outfitters - Hunting Reports

10/12/2008

We had an excellent first week of hunting. In five hunts we killed 77 ducks and 3 geese. Half the birds were teal, about 1/4 mallards. The heavy rains coming over the weekend will probably slow things down. It's not the most fun to hunt in the rain, but it sure is beneficial for the ducks. I still have some opening in the beginning of November. Give me a call or send me an email for more details.

It was great to finally get back out hunting ducks again. We hunted a smaller lake that had a large number of ducks using it. We ended up killing 30 ducks consisting of primarily Green Wing Teal. We also had a few Mallards, Wood Ducks, Blue Wing Teal, a Gadwall, and a Ringneck. A lot of the potholes were low and many were barren of ducks, but others had a fair amount in them. It appears that most of the Blue Wing Teal have already migrated South. I expect a good number of ducks to migrate into Minnesota on the next North wind. We're off to a good start!

Fall has finally arrived! I winterized the bass boat yesterday. During the summer I fish about 20 bass tournaments. It was a good season with its ups an downs but overall I did fairly well. The duck season is approaching fast and things are looking good. The duck numbers are down a little and conditions in the Dakotas are dry. The drier the Dakotas are…the more ducks that will migrate into and through Minnesota. We plan to capitalize on that. I still have a fair number of openings so now would be a good time to contact me and book a hunt before the schedule is full. I will be posting reports from now till the end of the snow goose season on a regular basis. The Minnesota duck season opens on Oct 4th and closes on Dec. 2nd.

The birds moved out the day before I was scheduled to come home. We had a good last 4 days. Last Wed we killed 53 including a yellow collared Ross and a leg banded snow. Thursday we saw a lot of birds but they were hard to get into good shooting range. We ended the day with 13. Friday was pretty darn good. Big flocks of juvies showed up and came in good. The only problem was that they only flew for about 2 hours in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. We bagged 37.….most of which were juvies. Sat there was a fair amount of birds flying north in the morning but few interested in working the spread. Sat evening only one small flock of geese was spotted. We killed 8 and decided to pull the spread and head home.

We will be heading to ND next week to hunt with family and friends. I hope there are still some geese to be found!

Overall it was a great season. We had some unstable weather to deal with but we made the best of it. We are looking forward to providing quality, enjoyable and successful spring snow goose hunts in 2009.

We set up in a hot field that had probably 5,000 - 10,000 birds in it the night before, but very few of them showed up the next day. We called it quits at 11:00 with 10 birds. It could’ve been better, but it also could’ve been a lot worse.
