Minnesota Duck Hunting

All of our Minnesota duck hunts are traditional water hunts. We hunt over enormous spreads of custom and high quality decoys. On a typical day your guides will deploy between 150-200 duck and goose decoys. Mallards are the primary target, but pintails, blue and green winged teal, widgeons, gadwalls, canvasbacks, redheads and Canada geese are all common birds in our bag.

Our western Minnesota big water duck hunts will be on the some of the best lakes in Western Minnesota and a couple of lesser know hotspots. As your guides, we scout and relocate our hunts daily to stay on top of the best concentrations of ducks in Minnesota.

The Hunt

On our duck hunts, your guides will typically set out our spread and then pick up the hunters an hour before shooting time at the pre-determined meeting spot. This allows plenty of time to get to the spot and prepare for the day. We will hunt from legal shooting time (½ hour before sunup) until 1pm. We use natural camouflage for 90% of the spots we hunt. Each duck hunter will have a bucket seat with back support that also doubles as a shell box and cooler.

Minnesota Duck Hunting Dates

We will be guiding out of Ortonville, Minnesota from October 2nd through November 10th, 2010.

Guns, Gear, Shells

Bring plenty of firepower. When I guide for ducks, I recommend a 12 gauge with a box of BBs and another box of either 2s or 3s. That should have you covered for ducks and geese. I highly recommend chest waders for all duck hunts. Hip boots are ok. If you do not have either a good pair of rubber boots will work. Also, wear a waterfowl patterned camouflage top, and bring a camouflage rain jacket just in case. It's best to dress in layers - it is easy to remove as the day warms up…but sometimes it stays cold. Anytime you're hunting, it's better to bring too much warm clothing than not enough. Also bring plenty of water/drinks. It is always nice to have some snacks along on the hunt.
